Hey there lovelies!
Today I want to talk to you all about side hustles. Before I dive into it, I want to define it.
Side hustle: noun; /Sīd həsəl/
Supplementary income from work completed outside of your main hustle aka your job.
What is a side hustle?
A side hustle is a great way to generate extra income on the side of your 9-5. This supplementary income can be in the form of freelance work, gig jobs, per diem work, and others alike. It is not to be confused with a second or part-time job where you will still need to abide by a schedule set by someone else. Essentially you decide how much you want to work and how much you want to make outside of your employment. It is typically completed during nights (or the day if you work nights), weekends, vacation time, etc.
It is important to know that your side hustle should never interfere with your main job. I repeat, DO NOT LET IT INTERFERE WITH YOUR MAIN JOB. Your side gig may be your passion project or something else enjoyable but let’s not forget that your 9-5 is what pays the bills and funds majority of your life. With that being said, your side hustle can grow into your own business and replace the need for your original job. But it does not have to. Also, check if your job has a policy against moonlighting if your side hustle relates to your work. Check in with HR if you are not certain to avoid any conflict, or worse, termination.
Why side hustle?
Aside from the obvious increase in income, a side hustle can increase your quality of life. Your side hustle can be your outlet to explore your passions without having the risk of quitting your job to pursue it. It gives you the ability to test out your ideas and explore your talents, without sacrificing your check.
If you are slowly crawling your way out of debt, you are not alone. You can budget like a pro and allocate the remainder of your paycheck to payoff efforts, but it can feel like it is taking forever. If you constantly play $250 per month towards debt with the left over money from your paycheck and you have a side hustle that brings in $250 per month, you can pay off all of your debt in half the time it would have taken.
What if you are comfortable handling your bills and such and just want some extra cash to play with? You can use your side income to fund your dream travels or your rock star nightlife dreams. You are essentially in control of how much you work and make so the money is yours to use as you wish (after setting some aside for the tax man of course).
Maybe you have parents or grandparents that you would love to help out financially and are already giving as much as you can from your job. Do you have a favorite charity that you wish you could afford to support? This is an awesome way to make money to cheerfully give.
Who should side hustle?
Any and everyone should have a side hustle. If you feel like you work a lot of hours already, I am sure you can squeeze in some type of work that can fit into your hectic schedule. If you think side hustles are reserved for the millennials and young at heart, you are wrong. More any more American over 50 pick up side gigs to make more money to catch up on retirement savings.
Some side hustle ideas!
Now for what you have been waiting for… some examples of side hustles that you can start right away! Before I jump into my examples, I urge you to write down all the things you like to do. Things like writing, drawing, singing, teaching, and so on. Once you write down your passions, hobbies and interest alike, list out what it takes to complete all of these. It may be some online tutorials to master your skills, special equipment to purchase, a website to sell your goods, etc. Now explore all aspects of these gigs and choose the one (or 2) that you think is best for you. Try not to be too ambitious and start multiple at once. Its better to master and monetize one than to be sub-par at a bunch of things that does not produce your best work. You can always pick up another one once the first is mastered.
Now for some very general examples. Keep in mind that you can niche down within each category or offer more than one service.

These are just some of the ideas that comes to me right now and a lot of them requires skills you may already have from your current job or hobbies. Others can be self taught as you go. Another great aspect of a lot of these side hustles is that you have little or no start-up fees. Some, like photography and vintage flipping, do require the purchase of equipment and/or merchandise. But you can start small, and grow as you make money. For example, camera equipment can be rented as gigs come up which is much less costly than buying a bunch of lenses and items up front.
I would love to know, which are your favorites from the list? If you currently hustle on the side of your 9-5, what do you do? And of course, if you think of any more great ones please leave them below in the comments! Sharing is caring. Who knows, you may inspire someone to start it!
That is all for now. I can do a follow up post as I stumble upon more hustles that I left out. In the meantime, happy hustling and may your bank accounts grow exponentially! And most importunely, enjoy what you do! You deserve it.
With love,
CoCo
