Hi There!
How is your spring going? It’s pretty wet and chilly these days in NYC. Even through it may be a bit drab out lately, I am still excited to be refreshing my spring and summer basics collection. And honestly, basics are anything but!
So why am I bothering to build a basics collection for this season anyway? Well it’s because I find that when my basics are set, it becomes exponentially easy to build outfits around them by adding just a few key pieces. For example: I used to focus on buying items that I like and not always think about what I already own that will pair well with them. This led me buying more and more items to build each look. Once I started shopping for classic and timeless basics, it always worked with whatever item I purchased later on. I don’t buy a new set each year, but I do freshen up my collection as items fade, don’t fit well, etc.
Okay, enough with the “why”, let me dive into what basics I like to stock up on!
Black & White Solids
The good old classic black and white look, it never gets old. Black on black, white on white, and black with white– it looks so good! And what’s also great is that they are great bases to build a look from. Any and every color will work if you have the right pieces. I personally like to wear them as a color combo on their own. They key is to have the basics void of patterns and other colors. A wide leg white pant is ALWAYS in my closet and it creates some of my best looks. I love my black palazzo pants as they are perfect for work and play. Just about every top looks good with them and they can double as party-wear when needed. Another must-have in my book is the perfect form-fitting black skinny jean (preferably high wasted). I wear it to work at least twice a week and it doubles as cute pants for a night of drinking on the weekend. I pair it with a cute crop top and I am ready to hit the town. Any color will work. I also like to wear them under dresses for a chic, layered look. The possibilities are endless.
The perfect Denim
I love to keep a pair of black skinny jeans (as mentioned above), medium blue skinny jean, mom jean and cropped jean in my arsenal. With those options, you can create any look. You can be sleek and form fitting one day, edgy and baggy the next, and fun another day. Below I have shared my favorite ones in my closet at the moment.
Solid Color Tops
I love a good basic, solid color top! I love to keep a few crisp white tees on hind, all with a different fit or neckline. I also love solid colored fitted turtlenecks, tees, and sweaters. In the case of a spring wardrobe, I focus on solid colored tees, button ups and bodysuits. It makes dressing for work a breeze. I pair them with different pants and I am out the door. Bodysuits automatically make any look better! I don’t know what it is about them but they just work perfectly with everything. And when I want to get creative, I use them to build upon an outfit. I layer with statement tops, patterned pants, sassy skirts, bold jewelry, etc.
Now that you have these basics down, you are set! They can all be mixed and matched to be a look on their own or compliment any new piece you introduce into your wardrobe. Did you get a fun, new ankara print skirt? Perfect, grab that solid color cropped top that compliments the colors in your skirt and you are set. Have you found a bright orange wide-leg pant that you are in love with? Pair that bad-boy with a crisp white tee and bold accessories. Or even a solid green or yellow top and you are set!
Now I want to know, what are some of your favorite basic pieces? Let me know in the comments!
With Love,
CoCo

Too cute! I’m into the one shoulder tops. I had a few back in the day. Will definitely add to my wardrobe this summer.
